The house

Five bedrooms, and a door onto the jungle from every one

Casa Frondosa is a modern house built into a forested ridge, arranged so that a group of 12 can be together when they want to be and out of each other's way when they do not.

The main floor is open on two sides, with glass from floor to ceiling and doors that fold back onto the pool terrace. A separate building nearby holds the pool table, a big television, a bathroom and the desks. Above it all, an open-air terrace that is the best seat in the house at about six in the evening.

Where everyone ends up

The living, dining and kitchen space runs the width of the house, and the covered terrace outside it is a second living room with its own kitchen, bar and dining table.

The bedrooms

  • Bedroom 2One king bedPrivate patio
  • Bedroom 3One queen bedPrivate patio
  • Bedroom 4One king bedPrivate patio
  • Bedroom 5One queen bed and a sofa bed

6 beds across 5 rooms, sleeping up to 12, over three living levels. 5 bathrooms in total, 3 of them en suite.

The two bedrooms on the third level and the bedroom on the first level each have their own en suite bathroom. The two bedrooms on the second level share one.

Every bedroom has air conditioning and a ceiling fan, and four of the five open onto their own patio. The photographs below are of the rooms as they are; which one you end up in depends on how your group divides up.

  • A king bedroom with a wall of glass opening onto its own patio and the jungle
  • A king bedroom with a corner of glass looking out toward the coast
  • A queen bedroom with a round window framing the forest
  • A queen bedroom opening onto the jungle through a full-height sliding door
  • A king bedroom with sliding doors onto a private patio
  • A bedroom with a writing desk and a view into the canopy

Bathrooms, and the one that is outside

Carved stone basins, hardwood vanities, and a shower in the garden that is worth using at least once even if you did not think you were an outdoor shower person.

The pool, the decks and the game room

The pool is saltwater, so nobody comes out of it smelling of chlorine, and it runs to an infinity edge over the treeline. Upstairs, the open decks face the sunset. The entertainment building sits apart from the house and holds all of it at once: a full-size pool table, a big television, its own bathroom, and two desks with large monitors for whoever has to check in with work. A late night out there wakes nobody indoors. The monitors are screens only, so bring a laptop.

Practical things worth knowing before you come

Getting up to the house
A 4x4 vehicle is required to reach the house. No exceptions. The coastal highway is paved, and the final stretch up through the community is a steep mountain road that a standard car cannot manage.
Arriving
Gate and arrival instructions are sent to you privately once your booking is confirmed. They are never published.
Water
Spring water from the community supply, and excellent straight from the tap. No chemical treatment and nothing to filter, with two cold pitchers in the fridge when you arrive.
